INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE

"To be beaten is excusable; to be taken by surprise is unforgivable" NAPOLEON

Industrial counter-espionage :

Knowing if one is being spied upon, by whom, how and why, setting up a system to put an end to it as well as, if possible, gather evidence to engage in negotiation or court actions, or even to spread misinformation.

It is important to know that only 10% of attacks on company computer systems are due to pirating! The danger clearly emanates from the inside (setting up telephone tapping or a program like a "Trojan horse" by a snooping employee, computer fraud, client file copying, divulging vital information, employee betrayal in favor of the competition).

However, other dangers can concern you- according to Auguste COMTE, 60% of the global information activity is dedicated to industrial espionage.

During the 80's, HITACHI deployed great means to procure itself the descriptive brochures of new systems elaborated by IBM, but ended up getting caught by the FBI and forced to pay more than 800 million dollars.

In FRANCE, cooperation between industrials and the secret service goes back to the 50's. Information from the SDECE (today the DGSE) played an important role in the growth of certain national industries by creating, approximately 10 years back, the "Y" service, in charge of economic and financial information. It is capable of furnishing confidential documents on multinational firms' projects as well as their research and marketing plans.
As far as the DST goes, it intervenes regularly to prevent leaks in the large government infrastructures.

One of the branches of the KGB, dispersed in 1991, dedicates itself exclusively to industrial information and espionage, while a large number of its former agents selling their services and know-how to the private sector, in order to infiltrate companies and get closely guarded strategic information out.

In the U.S.A., certain highly placed individuals in charge of information such as James Woosley, former director of the CIA, do not hesitate to admit to the practice of industrial espionage (mainly among European countries). This latter expresses itself through field work, but especially through its principal electronic surveillance system known by its code name "ECHELON", managed by the US thanks to the powerful means of the N.S.A., "National Security Agency", whose budget exceeds that of the CIA. Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, participate also through a pact named "UKUSA".

In 1998, a European Evaluation Commission on technological and scientific choices, the STOA, "Scientific and Technological Options Assessment", authenticates it. "ECHELON" controls listening satellites, ground bases equipped with radar and electronic surveillance equipment aboard ships. It possesses the capacity of intercepting all types of communication over 90% of the earth's surface; whether it be GSM or satellite telephones, "ECHELON" listens to everything. Its computers can record 100 million conversations per month. 80% of the gathered pieces sorted by "ECHELON" would supposedly concern matters of economic origin. According to the D.S.T., the 500 largest French companies are eavesdropped by "ECHELON". The base which eavesdrops on European communications is in MOREWENSTOW in CORNWALL, Great Britain.

In 1994, counterfeits merchandise represented 500 billion Francs (100 billion Dollars), or 5% of the world's trade, of which 70% were copies of French products.

Today in France, there is one private security professional for every two public security professionals, whereas in Great Britain it is the reverse !
